Welcome and let’s get our S.W.A.G. on!
It’s been a journey and challenging few months for me in
different aspects of my life. It took some time and many attempts, but I am
back with a different approach. Although S.W.A.G. was just thought of, it’s
been in the making for some time now. Let’s go back to where it began in 2014…
The Beginning
In 2014, I was eager to advance my career. In doing so, I
took many tests as well as visited a couple of unemployment agencies. These tests
and visited all had one thing in common – social work or social services. I could
see it as I already had a degree in Criminal Justice focusing on Corrections. It
was just in my nature to “help” or “assist” others. So, I went back to school
after 11 years.
Fast forward to 2016, I did all the field work and obtain my
Bachelor of Social Work. Now, I need a job that will allow me to use these newly
learned skills. I completed an internship with a therapeutic foster care agency
and by the time I was graduating they had several case management positions. Unfortunately,
this was not what I wanted to do. The driving all over the city and unpredictable
schedule was not feasible with a toddler. So, in 2017, a year after I graduated,
an office position came up and I took it with excitement. It allowed me to
still relate to the clients but on a less face-to-face option. It was
overseeing the records for two of the regions. It was my first full-time job
with benefits!

So, Why Blog…AGAIN
This is not my first attempt at blogging. I used to blog
back in the early 2000s under two different pages. One was just a journal that
reflected my everyday life and experiences in the LGBTQ community. The other
was catered to recipes that my mom created that were different from others. They
attracted a few individuals. I think it was mainly because people wanted to see
how complicated, or none complicated my life was while getting some southern recipes
at the same time.
I think it is time for another attempt with so many
resources as well as platforms for people to vent and/or inform. Blogging is ultimately
an outlet for me to get through the many challenges of the life of a rising
social service work (not saying social worker because I am not licensed). I want
people to understand that they are not alone and there are others that are
changing careers – or attempting too – in the midst of a pandemic.
The name S.W.A.G. came about when I was trying to help a
group for social workers that I am in. initially, the name stuck with me, and I
decided to keep it for myself. It means Social Worker Addressing/Assisting
with Goals. Although I have not reached social worker status, the name
is fitting.
What’s the focus?

Every blog needs a reason or focus. Since I have degrees in social service – social work – many of the writings in this journal are going to focus on some aspect of social work. I am going to addressing my personal and professional goals as well. There will be some article reviews that I think are relevant as well.
Social work is a growing field with people working in different
aspects – foster care, law enforcement, human resources, schools – since the start
of the pandemic as well as the unarmed shooting of individuals and students not
being able to socialize the way they are use too. Reading my blog can be an
outlet for those people just as it is for me in writing it. every now and then,
we need to be reminded that the world is changing, and we must adjust the best
way possible. Social workers are the best way to address/assist with these goals
(S.W.A.G.).
